Additional Information

The Protea is such a majestic flower that I cannot help but feel a bit of pressure whenever I paint them.

These unique flowers have existed since prehistoric times with some estimates dating them to 300 million years ago.

The King Protea (Protea cynaroides) flower (one of the largest and most striking of the protea flowers) is the national flower of South Africa. It earns its name from its striking petals that resemble a colourful crown. The King Protea flower is so revered that South Africa’s national cricket team also adopted its name.

Protea is a genus of flowers from the proteaceae family. There are between 1,400 and 1,600 varieties of this flower that include a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colours.  In fact, it was named after Proteus due to its wide variety of shapes and colours. Who is Proteus? Well Proteus was the son of the Greek God Poseidon. Proteus, had a propensity for assuming new shapes or altering his appearance to avoid detection.  He was known for his wisdom, but he was not always eager to share his thoughts and knowledge. It seems Proteus preferred to while away the day sleeping in the summer sun. To avoid detection, he changed his appearance and shape frequently.

So it should come as no surprise that the protea flower symbolizes change and transformation across some cultures.
