Additional Information

Bee-eaters are one of my favorite birds, and I paint them more often than any other species.  They can often be seen darting about their riverside homes.  Birds have been a source of fascination for me for many years, and I am very lucky to have over sixty species visiting me at home.  As an artist, birds are a never-ending source of inspiration, with their vast range of forms and colours, and of course their individual personalities and unique behaviours.

I am happiest with my work when my paintings bring together many things that I love.  These include, firstly, a delight in the natural world surrounding me.   I live in the Gold Coast hinterland, an area rich in sub-tropical forests and streams, full of life, colour and pattern.  Layers of colour and pattern underlie my paintings, often combining natural plant forms with other elements from different times and cultures.

This painting is somewhat different to my usual process.  I liked the poured acrylic background as it was, and so have skipped  my usual stencilled layers of pattern.  The water-like patterns and the blue and aqua colours suggested the fluid darting movement and the colourful plumage of our Rainbow bee-eaters.  I like the way the realistically painted birds pop out and dart over the watery poured acrylic abstract background.
