Art has been part of her life from an early age with a creative, encouraging family and upbringing. She has admired the world-renowned artist Monet for a very long time and the artistic expressions of the early 20th century Impressionism movement is still present in her art today. But it wasn’t until the Heidelberg School, the Australian Impressionism, and particularly Hans Heysen, who introduced and inspired the most defining elements in Felicia’s art; the delight of sunlight and the defining contrast.

“Initially, in my late teens, I admired Monet, especially after viewing his haystack series in Paris.  However, the German-born Australian artist Hans Heysen from the Heidelberg School is my main inspiration – his piece “Droving into the light” is divine! Fortunately, it is in the WA state collection, and I can visit it!”

“The movement of the sunlight and unique colours of the Australian landscape captive me. The Australian light, especially in the bush, is so singular, clear & ethereal. When paired with the colour of the earth and vegetation it creates a truly iconic landscape, the contrast is striking,” Felicia described. “These elements captivate me and encourage me to recreate the splendidness in my work. It is the colours of Flinders blue, violet, gold and yellow oxides, cerulean and pacific blues, raw and burnt umbers together with glazes of micaceous pigments to fashion a slight shimmering.”

Felicia’s artistic process is embedded firstly and foremost in her daily life. Her camera is her constant companion that helps in capturing the everyday objects, scenes and details she comes by. Creativity is her other companion, while at certain times the inspiration can be more sporadic. Nevertheless, art is always present; composing an artwork, arranging flowers, home renovations, or just viewing the world. Everything is of colour, light and form to Felicia.

“The ‘My backyard series’ came about when I crafted supports from recycled jarrah fence palings dowelled together. It was fitting that I painted the animals and flowers that were found on our bush block in WA, and a couple of others like the endangered state emblem of WA – the numbat.  It represented the combination of recycling and wildlife awareness.”

“During this period, I was also developing the ‘Bokeh series’ (pronounced “bokay”) Japanese term for “to blur”.  I have been fascinated for decades with the images achieved from camera lens refraction and out of focus depth of field orbs. In my early work, you might see reference to this with a blurred out of focus backgrounds, while the current works now encompass the full view. These works are based on images that I have taken in the late afternoon, twilight and/or night-time traffic.  The lights are being diffused into orbs of sparkling colour,” Felicia said. “Sunlight series has been a constant companion for me. I have revisited it numerous times over the past two decades, careful not to become too formulaic or staid, challenging myself to reinvent these beautiful views of a fleeting moment in time. I have wanted to engage the viewer by way of colour, the passage of light and even invoke the possibility of the eucalypt and earth smell.”

Felicia counts herself as a traditionalist with a need for authentic skills, an appreciation for learned processes and a yearning for lifelong learning. Continuously improving herself and challenging and developing her art are vital and relevant elements of her practice.

“Art is style; it is the echo of someone’s personality – their colours, outlook, perspective and interior ambience,” Felicia said. “I wish to depict the wonder [of our surroundings] right here and now and how fortunate we are. All while simply wanting to bring artistic joy to [people’s] homes.”
